Speedwell Academy

Speedwell Academy, also known as The Powell Valley Male Academy, is a historic building in Speedwell, Tennessee. The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since February 16, 1995. Built in 1827 by slaves owned by George Shutter, an immigrant from Germany, who financed the school.  Mr. Shutter had no children but believed very strongly in education. During the Civil War, the school was used as a hospital and as a headquarters for both sides. Over the years, the building deteriorated and was restored, continuing to serve as a focal point of the Speedwell Community into the 21st century.

Speedwell Academy is located on Academy Road in Claiborne County, TN, just off Old Highway 63. The building is open for tours, exhibits and educational programs, and even parties. Parties and receptions can be booked at no charge, but free-will donations to help with the upkeep of the building are welcome. For information on reservations, call 423-912-2325 or 423-871-2784.
