Hensley Settlement (Living Museum)

Nestled atop Brush Mountain in Bell County, Kentucky, the Hensley Settlement offers a captivating journey into the past. Established in 1903 by Sherman Hensley and his brother-in-law Willy Gibbons, this Appalachian living history museum is part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Visitors can explore 12 homestead log cabins, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and a restored spring house used for food storage. The settlement, which was occupied until 1951, never developed modern infrastructure or technology, allowing guests to truly feel as though they have been transported back in time.

For a deeper understanding of the Hensley Settlement, join a guided tour led by a knowledgeable park ranger. As you stroll down historic fence-lined lanes, you’ll learn about the fascinating history and daily life of the settlement’s inhabitants. The 4.5-5 hour tour provides an immersive experience, showcasing the unique heritage of this isolated Appalachian community and offering a glimpse into a bygone era.
