Berkau Memorial Park

Berkau Memorial Park is named for Russell Berkau, a Kansas native who traveled to Cumberland Gap and became one of its most successful businessmen. Berkau came to East Tennessee and purchased an old wagon works. He soon saw that change was coming and became the area’s first Ford automobile dealer, ordering 10 Fords in 1914. Those were soon sold, and his dealership thrived.

Berkau also was a pioneer in the distribution of fertilizer, helping restore the productivity of many area farms. He also was a hardware dealer. His importance to the community is recognized in a beautiful public park that reminds people of his accomplishments.

The public park is open daily at 601 Pennlyn Avenue.
